Instructor Biography
Maria (Hoeppner) Tinnell

Maria's work is a form of basketry known as coiling. She enjoys creating clean lines and controlled forms using linen thread and nylon cord. Linen is both beautiful and
durable giving her pieces a strength that cannot be described. Historically, baskets have been both utilitarian and decorative. They can help tell a story, record important occasions, and pass guarded messages.

She enjoys blending traditional and contemporary patterns in her work, using color to enhance traditional patterns or creating contemporary pictorial designs.

Maria has the luxury of taking her studio wherever she goes. She does not require water or electricity.  Stitching by hand does not require loud machines or protective gear. She has often taken a walk and found a quiet spot in nature to sit and work.

Maria received a BFA from the University of Louisville (1984).

Her work has been printed in Arts Across Kentucky & Louisville Today magazine.

A native of Louisville, Kentucky, She has been creating her unique style of baskets since 1981.

Member of LAFTA since 1999.
